Biography
Dr. Celeste Chamberland, Ph.D., is a Professor of History and Program Director for the History and International Studies Programs at Roosevelt University in Chicago. She is a scholar of the history of medicine, early modern Europe, and the Atlantic world, with a specialized emphasis on gender, race, and cultural history.
Dr. Chamberland’s published research focuses on gender and the professionalization of surgery, as well as the history of mental illness in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Her current research interests explore the relationship between masculinity, medical moralizing, and the proto-medicalization of addiction within the context of emergent global capitalism. She teaches courses spanning world history, the history of public health, medical racism, drugs in world history, epidemics, and gender and power in the Atlantic world.
Dr. Chamberland earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Davis, her M.A. from Concordia University in Montreal, and her B.A. from the University of New Brunswick. Her research has been widely published in leading journals such as Social History of Medicine, History of Education Quarterly, Sixteenth Century Journal, and Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences.
